Town Councillors’ Surgeries
The Town Council has now introduced Councillor Surgery appointments to suit you, at any time during the month (Monday to Friday during office hours). Surgeries allow anyone from the community to speak to a Councillor on a one to one basis about any issues or concerns that they may have. To make an appointment please telephone Sarah Page on 01449 776390.
Market Loyalty Scheme
Every house in and around Stowmarket should now have received a leaflet at the end of July / start of August telling them about the new Market Loyalty Scheme that has been launched. The leaflet includes a tear off loyalty card for customers to use. Every time a customer makes a purchase of £3 or more at a participating stall on Stowmarket Street or Farmers Market they will receive one loyalty stamp (one stamp per transaction of £3 or more). Once they have collected 10 stamps they can exchange their loyalty card for one of the following:
Town Council Public Services Manager Daniel Harvey said, “This is a big improvement on the previous scheme as it provides customers with a choice of benefits whereas previously the only option was free cinema entry. Also, the extent of the promotion is much greater. Over 12000 homes will have received a loyalty card through their letterbox. We hope that it encourages more people to come and check out our excellent market which is busier than it’s been for years.”
Market Contact: For more information on markets, including enquiries from traders interested in coming to Stowmarket, please contact Market Warden John Harvey on 01449 612060 or 07894751409 or email johnh@stowmarket.org.
Community Centre
The Community Centre welcomes everyone back for autumn. Our refurbishment work has been completed with all the rooms now available for bookings, subject to availability. The Children’s Centre (‘Sunshine’) will be open in September. The ‘Sunshine’ team have a programme of events and will be on hand to keep parents of children under 5 years old informed of what is going on in the Combs end of Stowmarket. Heather would like to give a big ‘Thank you’ to all her Centre users for all their patience during the last year regarding all the ongoing building work. The end result has made all the work and upheaval worth it. For information on room and main hall hire please call Heather Tooke on 01449 613084 or e-mail heathert@stowmarket.org
Summer Music in the Market Place – A further date
Due to the huge success of the Summer Music in the Market Place during August we have decided to put on one more date. Dumbfoundus will be in Town again on Wednesday 1st September playing three sets starting at 11.30am with Café No. 1 providing an open air café. Town Centre Manager Mark Strachan said “We’ve had so much positive feedback from people about the events during August and as they’re such a great band, we thought it would be an excellent idea to ask Dumbfoundus back one more time this summer.” If you have any queries on the street entertainment, please contact Mark Strachan on 01449 776391.
Anglia in Bloom
All the team at the Town Council worked extremely hard to enter this year’s competition and judging took place on Tuesday 20th July. Our expectation is that Town will again be recognised for its efforts this year. Thanks go to Polstead Press for working with us to produce another fantastic competition portfolio, a copy of which can be requested by emailing Sarah Page at sarahp@stowmarket.org Also, a big thanks to all of you who supported the event and in particular the following businesses and individuals who provided specific sponsorship for the Hanging Baskets displayed around the Town: -
The Bridge
Suffolk County Council and Birse have advised that the long awaited completion of the B1115 relief road with the construction of the bridge over the railway line is due to take place on 2 September 2010. In order to commemorate this historic event, in conjunction with Suffolk County Council and Birse, Stowmarket Town Council will be arranging an opening ceremony on the day. A further public event is currently being planned and will involve as many local residents and businesses as possible.
Free Gazebo use for Voluntary Groups
Are you a voluntary group in Stowmarket, Stowupland or Creeting St Peter, and would like to use a gazebo for an event you are doing? Stowmarket Town Council has gazebos that are ready to hire, free of charge to voluntary groups or at a small cost for businesses. The gazebos are 4.5m x 3m and are extremely strong, very easy to put up and water proof. There are terms and conditions of use and a £100 damage deposit per gazebo is required for each use. If you have an event at which you would like to make use of a gazebo, please contact Sarah Page at Stowmarket Town Council on 01449 776390 or email sarahp@stowmarket.org.
Pickerel Project
The Pickerel Project is a voluntary group seeking to regenerate and improve access to the River Gipping in Stowmarket and make the riversides more attractive to people and wildlife, and nicer for everyone in the town. On the first Sunday of every month a team of people get together to spend a couple of hours helping clear up the river bank. It’s fun, good exercise, a great way to meet new people and excellent for the town and the environment – so why not come along and help? The Group will next meet at 10am at the Station Road Bridge on Sunday 5th September and Sunday 3rd October for a couple of hours. For more information on how to attend please call Sally Scott on 01449 776398.
