Town Council Update July 2010

Town Councillors’ Surgeries

The Town Council has now introduced Councillor Surgery appointments to suit you, at any time during the month (Monday to Friday during office hours). Surgeries allow anyone from the community to speak to a Councillor on a one to one basis about any issues or concerns that they may have. To make an appointment please telephone Sarah Page on 01449 776390.

Anglia In Bloom

Stowmarket Town Council is delighted to announce that it has submitted an entry into the Anglia in Bloom competition this year, following the success of last year’s entry. On Tuesday 20th July the Anglia in Bloom Judges will come to Stowmarket to assess the town’s entry. Last year the town received a High Silver, and hopefully we can build on that success this year. There has been much support in the lead up to this years bid, and we would like to thank everyone that has been involved. For more information on how to get involved please contact Sarah Page on 01449 776390

First Stowmarket Festival A Big Success

The first ever Stowmarket Festival was a great success with a wide range of events taking place in the town between 27th May and the 6th June. Among the festival events were a comedy night at The Regal, street entertainment in the market place, a concert at the John Peel Centre for Creative Arts featuring Stowmarket Chorale and Stowmarket Concert Band and a flame show at Red Gables. Daniel Harvey, Festival Co-ordinator, said, “We wanted the festival to bring exciting and entertaining new things into the town and it did just that – and on top of that, it’s kickstarted some new activities. For example, the comedy night is being repeated and will hopefully become a regular thing. We are planning street entertainment throughout the summer along with an open air café on the Market Place.”
Thoughts are already turning to Stowmarket Festival 2011. If anybody is interested in getting involved in the event, please contact Daniel Harvey on 01449 776394 or email danielh@stowmarket.org.
* The next comedy night is taking place at The Regal on Sunday 29th August at 8pm (bar open from 7pm) and will feature Dougie Dunlop, Pierre Hollins, Neil Cole and Mickey Sharma. Tickets cost £12 each. Look for the special offer voucher in this edition of In Touch.

Summer Music In The Market Place Planned

Stowmarket Town Council is planning to stage street entertainment in the market place during August. The events will take place on Wednesdays and will feature quirky, talented musical acts from around the region. It is hoped that an open air café will also feature. Town Centre Manager Mark Strachan said, “The street entertainment during Stowmarket Festival worked so well and it created such a great atmosphere in the town centre, we thought that it would be a good idea to make this a regular event for our town through the Summer. We plan to have an open air café on site as well, so people can enjoy the entertainment over a coffee and a bite to eat. We hope that as well as attracting passers by, people will come into our town with their children specifically for the music – and hopefully do a bit of shopping while they’re here!”
Acts to appear will be announced shortly but if you have any queries, please contact Mark Strachan on 01449 776391.
