ANAEROBIC DIGESTION
Most people say “What’s that?” Well it is creating energy from organic matter, like food waste, or sewerage waste. Wendy attended a Conference at Newmarket organised by Suffolk County Council on behalf of the East of England. With the price of petrol going up, and the dangers of nuclear power as demonstrated by the disaster in Japan we need to think of alternative ways of producing energy. Several practical examples were given of where this has happened. Staples Vegetables, Boston, Lincolnshire, grow vegetables and supply them on a large scale to supermarkets – they have used the off cuts from vegetables, and also excess vegetables which in the past would have just been ploughed back into the land, to create enough energy to cool their large vegetable sorting warehouse and also to heat their offices. On a smaller scale we were shown examples in India where domestic waste has created enough gas to fuel a gas ring; or fill something which looked like an inflatable mattress to take to market to sell the gas. We need to think how we can put our food waste, and sewerage waste, to good use, rather than just sending it to land fill, or disposing of it in other ways. The Rt. Hon. John Gummer, Lord Deben, was one of the speakers.
