Keith Wood Associates: Tax Return deadline

Tax Return deadline

As you will have realised the deadline for filing your tax return on-line for the year ended 5 April 2009 has passed. Almost 6.5 million taxpayers filed their self assessment returns online ahead of Sunday’s deadline. Now is the time to prepare for 2010 and avoid any last minute rush, unexpected tax bills and higher accountancy fees.

Plan to have all records complete and with your accountant as soon as possible after 5th April. If your return is filed by 31 July 2010 you may be able to reduce your second payment on account, easing your cashflow. The earlier your return is filed the better. That way you will have earlier information about your future tax liabilities, or be able to make a claim for any tax overpayments.

If you are employed and have a tax code and a tax liability of under £2,000 this can be collected via your tax code rather than paid over directly if your return is filed on-line by 30 December.

Plan ahead and get organised so you can relax next January knowing that your return is filed and you won’t have any tax bill surprises.
