Each year intrepid men known as “mo bros” grow moustaches during the month of November. Their aim is to promote awareness of health issues, particularly prostate, testicular and other cancers specific to men. In the process, raising funds to support the charities, who quite literally want to “change the face of men’s health”.

To support us, and for info go to http://uk.movember.com/ (google UK Movember), simply click donate, then select team, and type “flaming tashes”.

You can logon during the month, as we post our tashtastic updates!. There are also collection boxes located at supermarkets, petrol stations, and our employers around the town.

As it is proven that men are less likely to seek medical advice, or visit their doctor than women..

Organiser, firefighter Andy Gunn says “with a man dying from prostate cancer every hour in the UK, its time for men to use movember, to think about their health”

In response to the issue of parking in the Market place, I feel strongly that Stowmarket is hostile to shoppers and bankers who don’t want to spend £1 parking their car for a five minute trip into a Bank or shop. Why do many small towns seem to be able to allow short term parking in their main streets and Stowmarket cannot. Pedestrians would soon get used to it and would take extra care if they had to. I would dare to suggest that the town centre might be more used if free ‘up to 15 minutes’ parking was easily available. E. Hart

Whilst I agree that a longer approach for cars turning left on Navigational Approach is needed, I certainly DO NOT agree that a roundabout would be preferable to the lights. I frequently use a Motability scooter to get into town and I feel far safer crossing on the lights with a proper island between carriageways than I would do trying to cross on a roundabout. My main gripe is that the pedestrian lights are not linked in automatically to the traffic lights, something that should be quite easy and inexpensive to achieve. At present if traffic is already stopped when the button is pressed the pedestrian light doesn’t change until the next cycle even though it would be safe to cross. Even so as one who has often sat up to 20 minutes waiting for the crossing gates to open the new set up is great.

Readers letter response to ‘New Bridge with old ways’
Dear Sir,
I wanted to express my total agreement with Mr. G. Young with regard to his letter about the mess under the new bridge.
I have sympathy with those that clean up this area, especially those volunteers from the Pickerel Project. My wife and I regulary take this walk and are witness to the needless damage caused with paint spray cans, broken bottles and discarded litter. From one day to the next it has become apparent that certain persons frequent this area at night to consume their alcohol and dispose of their empties into and around the river.
Similarly we were horrified to see the damage caused to the historic water pumping station by youths hurling the rubble left by the recent “improvements” at the roof tiles of this building. Is the now open building plot to be used as a new playground?
Mr. Ashley Barnard

Dear Sir,
The letter from Mr Young in the last edition of the Flyer (August-September 2011) raised an interesting question about who is responsible for the River Gipping where it runs through Stowmarket. Perhaps it is Suffolk County Council, who are charged with keeping public footpaths clear for all to walk along; perhaps it is the Environment Agency who have a duty to make sure the river flows freely and to prevent pollution of its waters; for a few months more bits around the new bridge may still be the responsibility of the contractor who has just completed its construction; and maybe it is down to whoever owns the land through which it flows (although because of the river’s history of canalisation, takeover by railway companies, nationalisation of railways, abandonment of navigation rights and railway privatisation it is impossible to find anybody who will admit to owning the riversides). But perhaps actually every one of us has their own little bit of responsibility for it.
Certainly, in the Pickerel Project we have decided that we should do our best to look after it, and to look for help and accept it from wherever we can. The front cover of the same edition of The Flyer had a lovely picture of our newly completed river bank scheme between the Pickerel and Station Road bridges. It has taken the Pickerel Project several years and a lot of voluntary effort to get this scheme completed and we have won help from many willing people, not least the developers of the Pickerel Court apartments who undertook a huge part of the physical work.
Another important part of our work is our monthly clean-up days where we have volunteers of all ages come along to pick up litter, carry out clearance work, and generally demonstrate that we care about the state of the river and mean to do something about it. Sometimes we concentrate on special jobs – last month we worked on taking rubble, bricks and stones out of the river, and the month before we were pulling out the Himalayan Balsam which has been threatening to overwhelm native wild plants. We are very conscious that the river is a great haven for wildlife – and we don’t intervene too much with stinging nettles because they are so very valuable in the ecosystem.
You will find us working along the river on the morning of the first Sunday of every month – we meet at 10am in the Prentice Road Car Park. The more people who come along the more we can do, and the better the river will look as a result. We will be only too happy to welcome Mr Young and anybody else who wants to lend a hand when we meet up again next month.
Jon Pattle
for The Pickerel Project

If you are interested in good music, a host of exciting artists are awaiting to thrill and entertain you in the 25th Anniversary Season of concerts at Stowmarket’s Regal Theatre.
Stowmarket Concerts believes in encouraging enthusiastic young musicians and in the months ahead we will welcome a talented young singer, a distinguished cellist, an award-winning percussionist and a string quartet of outstanding quality.
Our first concert, on Sunday, 30th October at 2.30pm, features a promising your pianist, Erdem Misirlioglu who was amongst the winners at the recent international Rachmaninov Competition for Young Pianists. He will be playing works by Beethoven and Liszt.
No recordings can replace the excitement and immediacy of a live performance beautifully enhanced by the absolute clarity of the Regal acoustic.
Why not pick up a brochure from Stowmarket library, Mid Suffolk Tourist Office or the Regal. This gives details of all our concerts of great music until March, 2012. Buying a ticket enables you to see these stars of the future before the world had made up its mind about them. Tickets cost just £8 at the door whilst £35 buys a better bargain of five transferable season tickets usable at any concert.
Season tickets are available from Rick Durrant, 14 Fairfield Hill, Stowmarket IP14 1NG (Tel: 01449 672608). Even better, if you are under 18, the door is open – you get in FREE!
So make a note – 2.30 in the afternoon of Sunday, 30th Of October at Stowmarket’s Regal Theatre – a feast of fine music!

A rugby tournament organised by Suffolk based disability charity Optua raised £500 on Saturday (13th August).
The ‘2011 Optua Rugby 10’s’ event, hosted at Stowmarket Rugby Club, gained support from Eastern Counties Rugby Union and was supported by teams from all over the region.
The winners of the tournament were Lowestoft & Yarmouth who overcame their higher levelled opposition, in the form of national league side, Shelford Rugby Club.
The money raised will help Optua’s leisure service provide more local activities for disabled people.
The day consisted of 10 games of rugby, a barbecue and a raffle. Graeme Anderson, the tournament organiser and Optua’s Leisure Activities Officer, is already talking of raising even more by repeating the event next year:
“The money raised will enable Optua Leisure to carry on enabling people with disabilities to access sports and leisure activities across the whole of Suffolk. Now the first tournament has happened, hopefully we can get a lot more interest for next year!”
John Winders, Chairman of Eastern Counties Rugby Union, said: “Sportsmanship, teamwork and enjoyment are at the forefront of Rugby Unions core values. It was quite apparent that all involved on the day took a great deal of enjoyment from this well organised tournament and that is a tribute to teamwork at Optua. Eastern Counties Rugby Union was pleased that it was able to support the event.”
On the day, six teams took part in the tournament showcasing the standard of rugby East Anglia has to offer. Hosts Stowmarket, who were joined by players from Colchester to form the ‘Stowchester Barbarians’, won the wooden spoon after losing to a nifty North Walsham development side in the plate final with Norwich Rugby Club finishing a respectable third place. Stowmarket Town Hornets

Rise of the planet of the apes star James Franco as Will Rodman, Freda Pinto as Caroline Aranha and Andy Serkis as Caeser. We also see Tom Felton in his first major role after Draco and he holds his own. Although the American accent was a little questionable he shows that he is able to move on from the Harry Potter franchise. Even though his role is one of the ‘Bad Boys’ you can see a clear difference between the two.
I went into this film with some in trepidation as I am not the biggest Planet of the Apes fan, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was a good science fiction film, some of the Visual Effect were a bit ropey for me like when using the wide shots but close up were excellent, and the shots of Caesar as a baby chimp are heart melting, so cute!
Will works for Gen-Sys a company working on developing a cure for Alzheimer’s disease, using Chimpanzees as test subjects. Bright Eyes a female Chimpanzee goes on the rampage after giving birth to a baby secretly whom she fears is under threat. The Head on Gen-Sys orders a mass execution of all the Chimps but the chimp handler just can’t bring himself to kill Caesar. Will takes him home to be kept safe but notices that Caesar has inherited his mother’s high intelligence.
Special mention I feel must go to John Lithgow who plays Will’s Father Charles Rodman. Charles suffers from Alzheimer’s disease and Lithgow’s Portrayal of this disease nearly brought me to tears on a couple of occasion especially when he told Will to Stop. Lithgow plays this role with such compassion and shows that even though suffers ‘loose themselves’ on the outside; they are still there on the inside.
