Stowmarket Swimming Club team arrived at a sunny Bungay pool for the second round of this year’s Suffolk Junior Summer League on Saturday evening. As last month the first swimmers set the bar high, with the first three all gaining personal best times. Elysia Golding and Ruairidh Penman both achieved new best times in the 13/U 4x25m individual medley with Elysia taking more than 3 seconds off her old best time and Ruairidh reducing his best effort at the distance by a massive7 seconds!

Roma, in her first time at a league race, kept her head and despite her goggles coming off stayed focussed to reduce her PB by 1.5 seconds to come 2nd in the 10/U 50m Back stroke in 41.95

There were a number of excellent races with swimmers all showing their winning spirit. Robert Borrett was entered in three races and swam faster than ever before in all them, achieving personal best times in the 11/U 50m Freestyle, 50m Fly, and 50m Backstroke. Eilisch Hopkins having taken 6 seconds off her 13/U100 Fly in the last round reduced it by another two seconds, and the followed it up with a huge 5 second pruning of her previous 100 Free time.

The final placings on the night were 1st Lowestoft and Oulton Broad, 2nd Stowmarket, 3rd Gt Yarmouth, and joint 4th Deben and Beccles.

To Raise Cash For Each Hospice Appeal
Ipswich Building Society is calling on local businesses to get behind the East Anglian Children Hospices (EACH) fundraising campaign and join in a fun charity golf day the Society is arranging for the appeal on Friday 14th May at Waldringfield Golf Club.
Several businesses have already signed up to sponsor a hole (just £50 each) although more are still needed. We are also looking for an innovative caterer or mobile bar to a small watering hole in a marquee on the course. There are also still some places remaining for company golf teams or individuals to take part.
Enjoy bacon rolls before teeing off for18 holes of golf, followed by a two course meal. Entry for a team of four is £200 or £55 per person. A Christmas Party for 20 people is up for auction, courtesy of Holiday Inn Ipswich, together with an Evening Escape to Belstead Brook, a Jeroboam of Bollinger Champagne (donated by Poulsen Selleck) and a framed Ipswich Town signed shirt. Anglia Coastal Marquees have donated a marquee for refreshments on the day and the hunt is on for a local catering firm willing to get involved to tempt the golfers with something different.
For further information about the golf day telephone Ipswich Building Society on 0845 230 8686

With the weather improving, Optua and the golf centre are hoping more people will be encouraged to come along and have a go. The sessions were launched in 2008 when Optua teamed up with the golf centre.
Anyone with a disability is welcome to come along and have a go. The sessions run on the second Tuesday of each month and Optua can also help to provide transport to help people get there.

The sessions are open to people with learning, sensory or physical disability and the golf centre is accessible. Anyone with a disability who regularly plays golf is welcome to come along to get some extra practice in.
Duncal Burl, Manager of the golf centre, said: “It’s a great time of year to think about taking up something new so we’d encourage anyone with a disability to give golf a try. The sessions are always relaxed and lots of fun. There’s nothing better than walking down the fairway in the sunshine in the middle of the Suffolk countryside playing golf!”

The disability golf sessions have a dedicated area at the Golf Centre and cover the swing, rules and etiquette along with all the different methods available. David Finn, Manager of Optua’s Leisure Services Manager, said: “This is one of many disability sport sessions available across Suffolk. It’s a great opportunity to learn a new sport with some expert tuition. Throughout the long, cold winter, the numbers of people attending the sessions have dipped a little so we really want to promote these sessions to local people with disabilities.” Optua Leisure organises a wide range of activities and sports opportunities for disabled people across Suffolk. For more information about the golf sessions call 01473 836770. They run on the second Tuesday of each month from 11am to 1pm and cost £8. Optua can arrange transport from Needham Market, Claydon and Stowmarket town centre to the golf centre.

A small fundraising event for Sport Relief held recently at Stowmarket Tennis Club just grew and grew and eventually raised over £800. Two young men, Tom Darling and Craig Dawson managed to play a full 24-hours of tennis while the rest of the club opted to pay and play in hour long sessions over a 24 hour period. Eventually over 50 members got involved and the event was finished in style with Josh Bolt and Oliver Whiting (Both high ranking Suffolk Mens’ players) taking on club member Gustavo Huss of Argentina and our club coach Chris Cunningham in a highly entertaining and exciting match. The winners on this occasion were Josh and Oliver but everyone is hoping to see a re-match sometime in the near future.
Our fun evening ended with a mobile Curry Van coming to Stowmarket Tennis Club and cooking a good selection of mild and seriously hot curries which were enjoyed by all players, spectators and guests.

Graham Drury put Bacton ahead with an emphatic volley from 10 yards out. Just ten minutes later, Sudbury got the equaliser from the penalty spot, bringing the score to 1 – 1 at half time. With twenty minutes remaining, Bacton’s Drury scored his second goal of the evening, which proved to be the winner. When the full time whistle sounded, the celebrations started. Joyous scenes among the players and spectators were a sight to behold, as Bacton left the pitch victorious. Speaking after the match Bacton Manager, Paul Evans, said ‘It’s just unbelievable Geoff’.
