A rugby tournament organised by Suffolk based disability charity Optua raised £500 on Saturday (13th August).
The ‘2011 Optua Rugby 10’s’ event, hosted at Stowmarket Rugby Club, gained support from Eastern Counties Rugby Union and was supported by teams from all over the region.
The winners of the tournament were Lowestoft & Yarmouth who overcame their higher levelled opposition, in the form of national league side, Shelford Rugby Club.
The money raised will help Optua’s leisure service provide more local activities for disabled people.
The day consisted of 10 games of rugby, a barbecue and a raffle. Graeme Anderson, the tournament organiser and Optua’s Leisure Activities Officer, is already talking of raising even more by repeating the event next year:
“The money raised will enable Optua Leisure to carry on enabling people with disabilities to access sports and leisure activities across the whole of Suffolk. Now the first tournament has happened, hopefully we can get a lot more interest for next year!”
John Winders, Chairman of Eastern Counties Rugby Union, said: “Sportsmanship, teamwork and enjoyment are at the forefront of Rugby Unions core values. It was quite apparent that all involved on the day took a great deal of enjoyment from this well organised tournament and that is a tribute to teamwork at Optua. Eastern Counties Rugby Union was pleased that it was able to support the event.”
On the day, six teams took part in the tournament showcasing the standard of rugby East Anglia has to offer. Hosts Stowmarket, who were joined by players from Colchester to form the ‘Stowchester Barbarians’, won the wooden spoon after losing to a nifty North Walsham development side in the plate final with Norwich Rugby Club finishing a respectable third place.

Stowmarket Volleyball Club is one of 14 in the country that has been selected to offer young people a fantastic opportunity to train as a volleyball coach, official or to support a club. With funding from V-Inspired they are able to offer free coaching, officiating and club development courses, including transport and accommodation expenses, for the young volunteers (aged 16-25). The courses are designed for people with no volleyball knowledge, but take you to a level that gives you a valuable qualification . The course fee for the coaching course alone is usually £200 before you consider transport and accommodation (the courses are not run nearby). Those people who choose to undertake the coaching strand will have two options: Leicester on Saturday the 8th and Sunday the 9th of anuary or Brighton on Saturday the 19th and Sunday the 20th of February. There is usually an assessment a couple of weeks later, but it is possible that this could be arranged closer to home. The officiating course will consist of a residential training weekend in Kettering from Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd January. Participants will undertake the Grade 4 refereeing course and line judging and scoring training. The club development course will also take place as residential course in Kettering from Friday 4th to Sunday 6th March. Participants will receive training on aspects such as website design and Club Mark accreditation. Having any of these on your CV / application forms will look great as they show a willingness to make decisions, communicate and help others.

Volleyball England are asking for a £50 deposit before young volunteers are given a place on any of the courses. This will then be refunded once they have undertaken 20 hours of volunteering with a club. There will be plenty of opportunities with Stowmarket VC over the summer and possibly also with Suffolk’s other clubs. The deadline for applications is 1st January 2011, however, if you want to get on the Leicester coaching course, you should apply to Ilona Berry (i.berry@volleyballengland.org) right now. This sort of funding opportunity doesn’t come around very often, so if you’re interested, go for it!

Pancreatic cancer is one of the worst types, it’s very difficult to treat and survival rates are poor. There is new research taking place in which the viruses are manipulated to specifically infect and destroy pancreatic cancer cells, this will hopefully lead to improved treatments with fewer side effects for cancer patients in the future.

This particular cancer has affected somebody close to Matthew Flynn, which has given him and his brother Adam motivation to raise as much money for this research as possible. They have decided, along with their friends Adam Bennett and Lee Bark, to cycle from Lands End to John O’Groats, this equates to about 900 miles. Matthew and Lee will be trying to make the trip in 5 days, as they are keen cyclists and the two Adam’s will be trying to make the trip for 8 days. If you would like to help this cause and support them in their trip the website is: http://myprojects.cancerresearchuk.org/group-giving/matt– two-adams-do-lejog, any donations will be greatly appreiciated.

Objective 2010/2011 Season

Needham Market Football Club is looking to increase its appeal to local businesses and residents. The club has been in existence for many years, the archives show that the club was officially formed in 1919 although records do indicate that games were played in the late 1890′s in the town. The football club will next season be playing at its highest ever level within football within the Ryman Division 1 North league having won the Ridgeons League and Cup last season, this success has been achieved with the support of many local people and businesses. Our focus for 2010/2011 is to grow our involvement with the local community and increase the number of regular attendees to the ground. The club has a record of raising large amounts for nominated charities, last year we worked with the following charities;

 Breast Cancer (Wear it Pink);

 Red Balloon Charity for bullied children;

 Help for Heroes.

Already the club has arranged a Golf Day (August 6th) atHintlesham Hall Golf Club with a donation being made to the East Anglian Children’s Hospice (EACH) Treehouse Appeal, please see our website for all the details and how to join in. Our association with the young footballers in the area has been active for a number of years via the Needham Phoenix Youth Football Club, this will continue to be fostered and thereby establish a regular pipeline of talent coming through. We also recognise the need to make the club’s facilities available for a wider audience and one of the longer term aims is to install an “All weather” pitch on the Bloomfields site which can be used by other clubs and other sports. We believe that, in spite of the gloomy predictions by the government and the media for the UK economy over the next few years, the World Cup and a successful local football team will bring out the best in the local population and provide a positive impetus for us all.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

If you or your company would like to be associated with a successful club and would like to join with us in making the local community proud please contact the club. This can be achieved in a number of ways ranging from sponsorships/advertising at matches, of players or at club level; supporting the Golf Day; regular attendance at our home games and any of the other initiatives to be announced.

PRE SEASON FRIENDLIES.

For the most up to date information log on to the club’s website at www.needhammarketfc.co.uk where you can find full listings of our pre season friendlies and also sign up to receive the monthly newsletter.

Stowmarket had a representative at the first weekend of the Eastern Championships in Ryan Clay. This is the first year that Ryan has made the qualifying times for the Eastern and he had two races over the weekend. His first was the 4x100m medley. Ryan started well and was with the leaders at the end of the backstroke leg. Turning on to his front he swam and excellent breaststroke leg and was in contention for a leading place at the freestyle change over. Ryan swam a strong freestyle stroke and came home in 10th Place with a very good time of 5:20.81. The promise shown in Ryans breaststroke leg of the medley was realised in his second race of the weekend, the 200m Breaststroke. Ryan came in in 6th place and booked his place in the final. If there is a recommended time to set personal records, it would be at the final of a major gala. This is exactly what Ryan accomplished swimming a strong and focussed race to touch home in 4th Place in 2:45:24 narrowly missing a medal spot. Ryan is undoubtedly pleased with his performance so far and aims to repeat this form next weekend.
